Insurance Isn’t Boring It’s Financial Self-Love

Updated: Jan 19

When most people hear the word insurance, their eyes glaze over. It feels complicated, overwhelming, and maybe even like something you’ll “get around to later.”

But here’s the truth: insurance is one of the most loving financial decisions you can make for yourself and for the people who count on you.

It’s not about worst-case scenarios. It’s about protecting your stability, your goals, and your peace of mind.

The Big Three to Review

There are dozens of types of insurance out there, but let’s focus on the three that matter most for nearly everyone:

1. Health Insurance

Healthcare costs are unpredictable, and even a single ER visit can be thousands of dollars. Whether you’re covered through your employer, a partner, or the marketplace, review your plan each year.

Key questions to ask:

  • What’s my deductible?

  • What’s my out-of-pocket maximum?

  • Does this plan cover the providers and medications I need?

2. Life Insurance

If someone depends on your income  (a partner, kids, or even aging parents) life insurance ensures they’ll be financially supported if something happens to you.

Even if you’re young and healthy, the earlier you secure a policy, the more affordable it usually is.

3. Disability Insurance

This is the most overlooked (and one of the most important). Disability insurance replaces part of your income if you’re unable to work due to illness or injury.

Statistically, you’re more likely to need disability coverage than life insurance during your working years. And yet, so many people don’t have it.

Don’t Forget: Employer Benefits

If you’re at a company with a benefits package, you may already have access to group health, life, and disability coverage at little to no extra cost. Review what’s available and consider supplementing with private coverage if you need more protection.

Why It Matters

Insurance isn’t just a line item on your budget. It’s protection from financial devastation, and it’s a way of saying: “My future, my health, and my loved ones matter.”

For women and LGBTQ+ households especially, insurance can provide the stability that traditional family safety nets don’t always cover.

Try This Today

  • Pull out your latest insurance paperwork.

  • Make a list of what you have (health, life, disability).

  • Highlight the gaps (do you have enough coverage, or are you underinsured?).

It doesn’t take long, and the peace of mind is worth it.
